The recent (okay not quite recent but I was too lazy to post then) death of a NS recruit while doing a 2km training walk has raised serious issues about the current physical fitness of our teenagers.

I have came up with several plausible solutions to beef up the fitness of our people, entrusted with the responsibilty to protect our lands in the future.

Employ our encik at 4SIR to be the Physical Education HOD. Get him to review the current PE syllabus and devise a new one. He will probably try to extend national service to 3 years as well.

IPPT should be held once a month and failures will have to stay back after school for RT

SOC should be included in the PE syllabus

Students who cleared SOC and got IPPT gold get exempted from exams and gets 4 days school week

Students who 'keng' a.k.a take status a.k.a excuse from PE are to make themselves useful by offering their service to clean the school

Parents who complained are made to join the program too

Banned canteen from selling food to obese students (Junhao watch out)

These are the few I can think of for the moment. Stop sniggering you bunch of people. It might just work. We just need to propose this plan to encik and he will be overjoyed to cooperate because this fits his modus operandi perfectly.

My mind always draw a blank when I want to update. Then I recalled Chee's suggestion to visit other blogs for inspiration. Hence I dropped by Edison's blog and from there, stimulated me to post this.

wakes up at 12noon
brush my teeth
eat lunch
plays computer games till 5pm or so
have dinner
feels too tired to do anything else
however still continues to play computer games
collapses on bed at 3am

The cycle continues everyday. I have finally understand why commanders from reservist unit were so uptight on our fitness. Being comfort creatures, it is difficult to resist the lure of the cozy confines of the house to exercise outdoors with the malevolent sun casting its deadly rays on you. I have long neglected running ever since Sundown, and god knows when I'll finally be motivated to start again.

Im particular infuriated with my horrendous perfromance in my virgin night marathon, the first ever night marathon in Singapore. I took a staggering 7hrs 15 mins to complete the race, an almost 2 hours discrepancy from my previous effort. What went wrong? I have came up with a list of what went wrong.

1. Insufficient training
I was doing fine until I felt the strain at the 10 klick mark. I knew I was in deep trouble. To feel pain at such a premature time/distance was a premonition, a subtle yet dangerous warning of a difficult race ahead. The omen materialized. I had to stop running at the 18 klick mark and I hit the wall at 20km (I hit the wall at 32km during standard chartered). Cramps threatened to flare with each step I took. I practically walked the rest of the 21km, running occasionally after some intense stretching. These happened because I had only a month of training. I had the luxury of three for standard chartered.

2. Conditions during the race
It was rather humid due to showers in the late afternoon, except for the breezy part at east coast park. Increase in humidity decreases evaporation rate, leading to a build of up moisture in my running shorts. The consequence is obvious. Abrasion! My mortal enemy since my NS days. I was particular susceptible to this condition and to let this occur during a 42km run was suicidal. I had no idea how I managed to complete the race.

3. Time of the race
To have a marathon in the wee hours was a refreshing idea. Yet no matter how much training we put in doesnt allow us to escape the bondage of being diurnal animals. Performance declines as the night progresses, since we are all tuned to resting at night.

4. The race route
The route was much more challenging than the standard chartered's. There were overhead bridges to cross, winding and undulating park connectors, narrow pavement were some of the examples.

I have to admit, the thought of giving up ever crossed my mind. However, I didnt want my effort to go down the drain. I endured and I triumphed.
